At this time of the year many of us are asking:
what is in store for us in 2007?
Any
answer to that question will have an economic meaning or significance.
My
view on the matter is that we will move on and build on what we
have now. Conversely, if you are destroying what you have then the
decline will continue as you enter 2007, unless you do something
to stop the downtrend.
If
we go macro, we can take the case of our Gross Domestic Product
(GDP). It’s going to grow from 5.7 this year to 5.8 next year,
5.9 in 2008, 6.2 in 2009 and 6.3 in 2010. To get the Gross National
Product, it is safe to add 0.5% increase to each year.
It’s
all about momentum even at the micro and personal level. And planning
that momentum is important.
Throughout
2006 we have been making decisions affecting our future. Planning
is, in a manner of speaking, doing something today which will have
an effect on the future. Planning is not all about the future. It
is, in fact, about what you do today.
Going
back to the title, what happens to our lives in 2007 is the product
of our efforts in 2006 and in previous years.
Certainly,
there are decisions made by others which will affect what happens
to us in 2007. We should have considered these in our 2006 activities.
We should have prepared for these so that we are ready once these
come.
And
the momentum for improving our lives from an economic stand point
(e.g. being employed, getting a raise, or transferring to a better
job that suits you) will happen as you planned them.
It
is really a joy to achieve what we plan for.
When
our dreams come true, we must rejoice.
In
this season of joy, as we celebrate the birth of Jesus, let us hope
that the momentum continues and our dreams come true.
