NEDA VIII holds Forums on Medical Transcription

NEDA VIII coordinated the conduct of two forums on Medical Transcription (MT), one in the morning of May 29, 2006 at the Eastern Visayas State University (EVSU) and the other in the afternoon at Hotel Alejandro, both in Tacloban City. The morning forum was participated by thirty-one (31) heads/representatives of State Colleges and Universities (SUCs) and private schools while the afternoon forum was attended mostly by local businessmen from Tacloban City. One of the resource persons for both forums was Ms. Myla Rose Reyes, the Managing Director of Total Transcription Solutions Inc. (TTSI), a medical transcription company based in Manila.

The forums were eye-openers to the people of Region VIII with regard to the MT industry. Participants learned the basic pros and the cons of the business as well as the potentials of Region VIII to be the next MT Hub. Topics discussed in the forums include: a) Overview of the MT Industry; b) MT as a Business Proposition; c) Technology Business Incubation; d) PGMA Training for Scholarship Program; and e) e-TSSI Product Demo.

Based on government estimates, the demand for MTs is currently placed at 13,000 but there are only 5,000 MTs in the country. This demand will go up to 114,000 MTs by 2010 and existing training institutions can supply only 30,000 MTs.

There was a positive response from the forum participants. In the morning session, several SUC heads committed to send to Manila two to three faculty members to undergo trainer’s training on medical transcription. Upon their return, the schools can then offer MT courses.

Vice-Governor Mimietta Bagulaya, who was present during the afternoon forum, affirmed that Leyte is ready for the MT Industry. Mr. Orlando Uy, President of the Leyte Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) who was also present during the said session, stated that if we go into MT, we will not be exporting workers, rather, we will be “importing work”.

With TTSI as enabler, and with the collaborative efforts of schools, local governments, government agencies, combined with the linguistic adaptation and computer literacy of new graduates, we have reason to believe that Region VIII will be the next MT Hub of the Philippines.
